Travel packing checklist: what to pack without forgetting the essentials

Passport, phone charger, medication, sunglasses… The challenge isn't always packing the bag. It's knowing whether you forgot anything. A reusable checklist makes the last check easier.

Why use a reusable packing list?

A text message can remind you of what to pack, but it doesn't always show which things are actually ready. Deleting items as you go may make the list shorter, but it also removes them from your final check.

A reusable checklist in Zamilist works differently: checked items stay in the same list with a strikethrough. You can see what is already packed and what still needs attention without losing the overall picture.

See the difference: checked items remain visible

In this example, two things are ready, while three still need to be packed:

🧳 Vacation packing2 of 5 checked
  • Passports and documents
  • Clothing
  • Phone chargers
  • Medication
  • Sunglasses

Illustrative example: checked items stay in place and remain visible with a strikethrough.

That's different from a shopping list, where purchased items move to “Already in cart.” Reusable checklists keep completed items right where they are. Choose “Uncheck all” when you're ready to use the list again.

Travel packing essentials to review

Documents and bookings

  • Passport or ID according to the destination
  • Travel tickets and accommodation reservations
  • Driver's licence if needed and important contact information
  • Payment cards and travel money

Clothing and accessories

  • Weather-appropriate clothing for the trip length
  • Underwear, socks and comfortable shoes
  • Swimwear, rain gear or activity-specific clothing as needed
  • Sunglasses and seasonal accessories

Health, toiletries and electronics

  • Toothbrush, toiletries and personal care items
  • Regular medication and required documentation for your destination
  • Phone, charger and essential cables
  • Power adapter or power bank when relevant

Before leaving home

  • Check doors, windows and appliances
  • Take out trash and arrange for mail if needed
  • Organize pet care or plant watering

Travel documentation, medication and transport rules vary. Check official information for your route and destination before departure.

When should you check things off?

  1. A few days before: add missing items and plan purchases.
  2. The day before: tick off clothes, accessories and documents once they are actually ready.
  3. Just before leaving: scan unchecked items. The completed ones are still there, so you can review the whole checklist.
