Camping packing checklist: gear to check before you leave

Your headlamp is packed, but where did you put the camping stove? A reusable gear checklist helps you see what's ready and what you still need.

Keep the entire list in view when things are packed

Little things are easy to forget on a camping trip: batteries, tent pegs, cutlery or first aid supplies. A hastily written note doesn't always help when several people pack things in different places.

With a reusable Zamilist checklist, checked gear appears crossed out but stays in the same list. You can review all the equipment at once without losing track of what's packed and what still needs to go in the car.

Example: checked gear stays visible

  • Folding chairs
  • Headlamp
  • Air mattress
  • Camping stove
  • First aid kit

Illustrative example: all five items are still displayed. The three packed items are crossed out.

Shopping lists behave differently: purchased groceries move to an “Already in cart” section. In reusable lists such as camping, checked items stay in place. Use “Uncheck all” to prepare the checklist again for your next trip.

What belongs on a camping equipment list?

Shelter and sleeping

  • Appropriate tent, pegs and ground protection if needed
  • Sleeping bag for the expected temperature
  • Sleeping pad, pillow and extra blanket as needed
  • Headlamp and backup lighting

Cooking and meals

  • Camping stove, suitable fuel and cooking equipment
  • Utensils, plates, food containers and cleaning supplies
  • Drinking water and meals for the campsite facilities
  • Cooler and a way to keep perishable food at a safe temperature

Clothes, safety and comfort

  • Warm layers and rain protection for changing weather
  • Appropriate footwear, spare clothing and socks
  • First aid kit and regular medication
  • Sun protection and suitable insect repellent as needed
  • Trash bags and basic hygiene supplies

Planning and access

  • Reservation confirmation and campground rules
  • Map or directions if mobile coverage may be poor
  • Who-brings-what assignments for a group trip

Check local fire, wildlife, water and stove rules before your trip. The right gear depends on the season, destination and type of accommodation.

Three ways to avoid leaving things behind

  1. Customize the checklist: don't bring tent equipment if you're staying in a fully equipped cabin.
  2. Check each item when it's actually packed: knowing where the stove is doesn't mean it's in the car yet.
  3. Review everything before departure: crossed-out items remain visible, and unchecked boxes show what's still missing.
